About GCES
The Global Center for Evidence Synthesis (GCES) evolved from the need felt for a world-class research center in the field of evidence synthesis. The founders, some of the best minds from the academic world, anticipated the leadership needs of the emerging fields of evidence synthesis. They recognized that the rapidly changing academic landscape would require young leaders who not only understand the science of evidence synthesis but who also present a global perspective.
The GCES is committed to creating such leaders through its innovative programmes, outstanding faculty and thought leadership. The GCES is a not-for-profit organisation. The Center is dedicated to advancing the field of evidence synthesis through research, education, and training. Evidence synthesis is the process of systematically collecting and analyzing all available research evidence to produce a comprehensive and unbiased summary of what is known about a particular topic. The principals at GCES aim to improve the quality and relevance of evidence synthesis by developing and promoting best practices and standards.
Our Vision
Our vision is to be an internationally top-ranked, research-driven, independent research institution that grooms future leaders for India and the world.
Our Mission
To create and disseminate research-based knowledge in evidence synthesis that influences evidence-based practice and policy. Community To utilise the knowledge and expertise to engage with academia, government, and society, and to contribute to the welfare and development of the community at the local, national, and global levels.
Key Activities
The center provides training and support to researchers, policymakers, and practitioners to enhance their ability to conduct evidence synthesis and use evidence in decision-making. We use a wide range of methods, depending on the availability of resources and the type of research question. Some of them are:
- Content analysis: Coding and categorization of qualitative/quantitative data
- Framework: Highly structured data extraction and organization, using a priori framework
- Narrative synthesis/review: Discusses diverse forms of evidence side-by-side to generate new insights
- Mapping / scoping review: Structured survey (open/closed-ended questions) of the systematically identified study cohort
- Meta-analysis: Quantitative pooling of effect sizes across studies. Involves identifying findings, heterogeneity, categorization, and grouping categories. Can include diverse data types (Bayesian)
- Meta-synthesis: Aggregating and/or configuring results from inter-related qualitative studies, aiming to develop theory and/or generalizable results
I. Thematic analysis (free-coding and grouping into themes)
II. Meta-ethnography (Re-analysis and comparison of the texts of published studies via transfer of ideas, concepts, and metaphors across different studies)
III. Interpretive synthesis (combines evidence with an intent to develop new concepts and theories/interpretations)
IV. Meta-narrative (Looking across different research traditions to uncover the unfolding ‘storylines’)
- Realist: Identification of causal mechanisms that underlie interventions or programs. Builds explanations across about why they work (or not) for particular groups in particular contexts.
Through its efforts, the Global Center for Evidence Synthesis contributes to the advancement of evidence-based practice and policy worldwide.
